Synopsis

Open from Wednesday 8 April to Tuesday 30 June

Sean Milne has been a regular exhibitor at the Wyeside in recent years. He works mainly in watercolour in fine detail, over a range of natural history subjects. This exhibition includes a variety of prints and original paintings, commissioned during his long career as a wildlife illustrator and artist.

His first love is birds, with a penchant for owls.  The set of four circular owl paintings in this exhibition, was commissioned by Wedgewood for a series of decorative plates. The paintings of fishes, fungi, sharks and butterflies are the original artwork produced for field guides.

Sean’s subjects are often placed in settings where the unstoppable force of nature, is reclaiming rustic buildings as her own. The butterfly on the door, the wren on the doorknocker, the owl at the window, invite us into the unknown and lead us to ask, what lies behind the door, on the other side of the broken windowpane?

This exhibition shows Sean’s deep interest in and love for the natural world and the unique skill he demonstrates in representing it.
